Brief Description of the FASTT MATH
FASTT, which stands for Fluency and Automaticity through Systematic Teaching and Technology, MATH is a computer program that uses game-like instruction to help students build their math fluency. FASTT MATH targets students in grades 2 and up who are struggling with math fluency and automaticity in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students who struggle with math fluency and automaticity are often unable to move onto higher mathematic understanding and reasoning; however, with FASTT MATH are able to improve their fluency and automaticiy and have greater success in more advanced math skills. Students enjoy learning, with FASTT MATH, because rather than drill-and-kill worksheets, students are participating in games and learning at the same time! The FASTT Math program helps all students develope fluency by creating individualized 10-minute daily lessons based on students' individual current levels of performance. Students are eager to use the FASTT Math system because it targets their level of understanding, provides engaging practice games, and motivates students to continue learning. FASTT Math is the perfect companion to any mathematics curriculum. FASTT Math can be set up on any computer, and students need only 10 minutes a day to work with the FASTT program. Additionally, FASTT MATH enables students to focus on higher-order math skills, as well as build their fluency.

"FASTT Math exceeded our expectations! It motivated our students to learn their facts- they loved it! It amazed us that the students are as excited about the program today as they were when they started it last fall. It energized our math instruction - we can now focus on concepts and not just computation. It supplied us with the progress monitoring data we needed for fluency."--Elementary School Math Coach
"Everyone at our school is passionate about FASTT Math. Teachers relate that students are rapidly increasing their math fact fluency in just ten fun-filled minutes daily. The reporting features make student progress simple to monitor and are easily understood by parents. Best of all, our students can’t get enough FASTT Math. In fact, given the choice I’d bet that our students would opt for FASTT Math over recess."-- Elementary School Principal

    Final Reflection
This program would be a great addition to any classroom, special education or general education classroom. The program targets students at their level of need and allows them to work at their own pace, mastering the skills necessary to move forward with their math education. This progam would be especially beneficial in the very common over crowded classrooms seen in most public schools today. With the FASTT Math program, students work individually at the computer, giving the teacher the ability to focus their attention on other students, while knowing the students working on the computers are gaining the practice they need.

Basic ProgramWords Their Way is a research based program of spelling activities. In this program the literacy and spelling skills are all taught in isolation. The program can be used to assist with instruction. Also, by analyzing spelling patterns students will also increase their familiarity and exposure to new words and vocabulary for spelling instruction. The instruction in this program is a scaffolding process. The student’s begin with working on known words to unknown words. This program is developed to help teachers address the needs of all readers and spellers. This process involves assessment guided, direct instruction utilizing sound and word sorts. It also provides the teacher with steps for a lesson that is completely teacher directed instruction. Although there are teacher-directed word sorts, there are also two other kinds: student centered sorts and guess my category sorts. The lessons, word sorts and activities are all multisensory and multilevel, thus making them available and appropriate for various learner needs, levels of instruction and grade.
    Getting Started
).To begin the Words Their Way program in the classroom, teachers can administer the spelling inventory to their class (Click to see sample). There are
Word SortsOnce a students’ developmental spelling level is identified, the teacher can begin instruction using the appropriate WTW word sorts. Each spelling level has a corresponding book of word sorts that are sequenced according to difficulty. Each word sort contains a list of {word_sorts.jpg} words that illustrate different spelling features, such as consonant-vowel-consonant patterns within words, vowel patterns for the long /a/ sound, or prefixes. After a word sort has been introduced, teachers typically spend about a week following routines that encourage students to practice for mastery. These routines include a variety of practice opportunities, including using the words in a sentence, performing student-centered or guess my category sorts, or timed sorts. Each activity serves to reinforce students’ understanding of the specific spelling feature being addressed. Through practice and by drawing attention to patterns of spelling, students are building important word knowledge and spelling strategies that can be used later on when encountering unknown words in connected text. {http://www.misswhyte.com/pictures/WTW/WTWsortwrite.jpg} A child completing a Words Their Way word sort

"This is the first year that I have been using this program and I love it! Although it takes a good amount of time to do this program, it is worth the time. I have seen a big improvement in my students' spelling. They are even able to spell words that are not on their list because they know the patterns to follow."
"This was a lot of work to do spelling this way, just make sure you're up for giving yourself more work... it is worth it for the kids. I saw some amazing progress in their everyday spelling/writing due to WTW."

-Graph the height of the Fastwalker (an animal from the mythical planet of Rhomaar) and write a rule describing its growht (5th grade).
-Solve number puzzles (e.g., "What number(s) is odd, greater than 50, a multiple of 15, and less than 100?) using their knowledge of number properties (odd, even, prime, square) and number relationships (factor and multiple).
Successful implementation of this program involves math coaches, leaders, teachers, and principals, to be strong and consistent in communication. Teachers must talk amongst themselves and also to the students’ families. This is to ensure that all are on the same page and working towards the same goal. Another area to address in terms of implementing this program is professional development. Teachers, leaders, coaches, administrators, and anyone else involved with the program should receive proper training of this program. Teachers can attend various workshops and institutes to further education on using the material in the classroom. This will allow teachers to feel confident as they use the material in their classrooms.
    Weaknesses
Because the program does not specifically use algorithms for most math concepts, it is hard for parents to help their children with homework. Parents' participation in their children's learning of mathematics would require knowledge about Investigations program, which many parents do not have. There have been complaints that because of the way the teacher’s part is scripted, it is almost frowned upon for teachers to encourage regrouping, long division, or other skills used with certain math concepts.
    Strengths
Investigations is a good program because it incorporates very hands-on activities, including computer software. Students are engaged with class discussion as they are actively learning mathematical concepts. Furthermore, students are able to engage in math areas as they play games. Games are there for students to have fun while learning. Also, Investigations allows teachers to be able to assess the students while they play the game in the specific area. The program includes software that allows teachers to monitor progress of their students in mathematical skills. Finally, this program also takes into account diversity of learners, including students with a language difference (i.e., students in ESL classrooms who speak Spanish at home) as well as students with learning disabilities. Investigations comes with a Spanish teaching companion, very helpful for students who do not speak English at a level of proficiency. This program also provides curriculum adaptations, such as worksheets with fewer problems and number keys, to help students of a variety of learning abilities.
This program could be used in an inclusive classroom as well as self contained and resource rooms. The teacher could divide the students by ability and have centers using the different content areas of math investigations. The teachers in the classroom would have to make sure to rotate to each of the groups to make sure the students were staying on track. Also, this program comes with a Spanish teaching companion so that teachers can provide the same information to the ELL/ESL students in the classroom.

    further instruction.
    Video
Also, using this program our first year of teaching would be difficult to implement on our own if it was not already being used because there is extensive training involved in using this program. This program also requires a high level of cooperation on the part of parents with things like homework. While this would normally be very feasible, many parents have expressed concerns about the methods by which Investigations employs. Instead of focusing on traditional means of teaching mathematics, which emphasize automaticity in computational skills, Investigations looks at the instruction of mathematical skills in an entirely new way that parents are unaccustomed to. This way, which emphasizes "mathematical experience" over concrete algorithms, is a controversial method.
